The design and development of learning ecosystems
requires a rigorous collaboration of architects,
engineers, builders, policy designers, educational
practitioners, community members, innovators and
theorists.
In this presentation a case study of Canley Vale HS
will be used to explore the challenges and in some
cases solutions to designing learning ecosystems.
We will explore the digital, physical and cognitive
needs of learners. Challenges explored will be style,
trends and futurism; metacognition, understanding
and knowing; equal and equity; collaboration, siloing
and creativity; refit, remodel and make new. In a time
of great public investment in schools we must reexamine
what school and learning is.
9:40 am - 10:20 am A Positive Approach to Student Wellbeing Represented by the Artemis Centre, Melbourne Girls Grammar
This session will explore the innovative learning space created at the Artemis Centre, a learning environment that represents a holistic approach to pedagogy, empowerment and wellbeing.
- The design considerations behind this project and its key challenges
- Creating multi modal learning spaces and activity zones that respond to student learning outcomes in the 21st century
- Artemis center as a space for communal, academic, physical and emotional wellbeing
10:20 am - 11:00 am Rototuna Junior High School Case: Dealing with a Rapid Increase in Student Numbers
Rototuna Junior High school originally opened with 630 students and could fit 1200 students. In 2018, the school currently holds 1300. This session will explore considerations that were made to expand the capacity of this school in the design and construction phase.
- Exploring how existing space was reconfigured to create new areas for learning
- Retrofitting of existing infrastructure
- Exploring the funding, planning, approval and design process of the current build which is underway
- Future proofing the existing build for population growth
11:00 am - 11:40 am Big Picture Education: Redesigning how Education is delivered to Young People
This session will explore how Big Picture Education Australia is actively re designing the delivery of education for young people in over 40 schools across Australia as well as countries including the US, UK, Canada, New Zealand, Italy Israel, India and China. This session will include:
- Exploring how schools can become personalized and successful?
- How is technology the need for young people who are problem solvers, creative thinkers and entrepreneurial
- Researched based classroom design that’s puts students at the center of decisions around what, how and when they learn
- Creating a creative, flexible approach to learning that requires an in-depth rethink about the sorts of spaces and learning environments young people will need into the future.

12:10 pm - 12:50 pm Delivering School Learning Environments to Assist in the Transition to Senior School at Tyndale Christian School
In this session, Jack Joyce will discuss Tyndale
Christians Schools innovative learning environments
and the new approach to teaching and learning within
them.
• Case study of the $4.5 million Tyndale Christian
Schools senior education building
• Exploring the design, planning and delivery of this
project
• Flexible learning spaces: exploring how these
spaces can be achieved at schools and the main
challenges of adopting these spaces
12:50 pm - 1:30 pm Caulfield Grammar School Case Study: Modular Design for Greater Affordability and Flexibility in School Learning Environments
This multi award winning project emerged from exploring what schools will look like in the span of five to fifty years. This project uses modular design which offers a greater affordability and the potential to be relocated however still remain high quality. This session will explore:
- How prefabricated design and construction was used to create bespoke spaces with the ability to be connected
- What role does design play in the effectiveness of learning environments?
- How can traditional classrooms evolve for collaborative learning?
1:30 pm - 2:30 pm NETWORKING LUNCH
2:30 pm - 3:10 pm Redefining Schooling for the Contemporary World
This session will explore changing school environments through new generation learning spaces including:
- How can learning space encourage critical thinking and collaboration
- Exploring the cultural shift that has taken place in the last 5-15 years that have changed schooling more than in the last 150
- How can schools create multi modal learning spaces and what are the main benefits of doing so?
3:10 pm - 3:50 pm Vertical Schools: Challenges and Opportunities
In this case study, Mark Freeman will discuss his role in designing learning spaces to improve student outcomes, specifically examining the challenges and opportunities of vertical schools in Australia.
- Case Study: Prahran high school developing a new model for developing multi level educational facilities
- Understanding the effects of vertical school infrastructure on the cost and time of the build and when it is most appropriate to utilise this methodology
- The key benefits and challenges to vertical buildings in school infrastructure
3:50 pm - 4:30 pm Refurbishing Existing School Buildings those are no Longer Fit for Purpose
This case study will focus specifically on refurbishing of existing school building and transforming aging infrastructure. This case study will explore the unique set of challenges faced by architects attempting a retrofit project.
- Case study of $3 million Somerville House Library refurbishment which was significantly improved through incorporating multi modal learning spaces and an extra two mezzanine levels which increased library space
- Incorporating usable study space and teaching and learning spaces
- Why should you invest in the future proofing of your building?
